Farming Memories

A couple of Wednesdays ago; was a surreal day for me. We have essentially retired from the Farming Business, but it will always be a part of us. Still we have some maintenance that we do physically have to do with our properties like mowing. On this day we needed to get Dad to the tractor so he could finish the mowing and get it back to be parked again.

We don’t really travel around where most of our fields were anymore. It’s out in the boondocks so to speak and not where we usually gallivant to unless we are on our way to other locations like Odon or Bloomington. These roads have so many memories for me and my family. There were times when we had to go through them no less than 3 times in one day. At the time it could be frustrating, but it was part of our job being the support system for our farmers. Honestly I relished being the ‘Farmer’s Daughter’ and ‘Farmer’s Granddaughter.’

On Wednesday though driving on those roads was hard. They were different. There is an area that used to be a bridge and now the bridge is in such disarray that it was closed. So no one can go straight through anymore. That’s the spot we went to on the other side. The road going up to that bridge, well you can tell it’s not used as much. Now only us and the DNR since it’s a part of the Goosepond Wetlands.

The first photo shows the road coming back out of where we were. The second photo to the left directly behind the little slice of car is where the bridge is that is no longer in use. As it shows greenery is completely grown up all around the area. The bridge is difficult to see here at all.

There are so many memories that these roads and fields hold for me. A few include me driving one of our little tractors to help clean a segment of a field that was not used before. Others include serving our farmers food, while some meant feeding them while taking them to other fields to get equipment or trucks to bring back to the current field. There were lots of different avenues of making memories for me.

Wednesday was just a day that really hit my heart strings. With not being around this vicinity as much as I had been 7 years ago my emotions were stirred up and old memories of Papaw and Mamaw were brought back to life for me. It just makes me miss being a ‘Farmer’s Granddaughter’ all the more as I miss being the ‘Farmer’s Daughter.’
