The Experience Versus The Reality

Yesterday morning I had to set my alarm for 6:30 am and 6:45 am. Mom couldn’t eat and we had already discussed eating breakfast afterwards. So in solidarity I fasted with her only taking my first pill as she also did. I wanted to sleep in until 6:45, but then I thought that only gave me 15 minutes even without eating to wake up to leave the house at 7:00 am. I pushed the snooze button and was awake, but stayed in bed for a few more minutes.

Once I got up and in the bathroom one of the first hiccups was the fact my toilet paper came out at me. I didn’t have it properly in place the night before. Oh my goodness it fell out and so much paper fell out of the roll. So that was my first big got ya moment of my morning. It was much worse than this before I took the photo. It just felt like something I could laugh about later like I am right now as I look at this roll of toilet paper.

Like I said I didn’t want to get up too early and think of food or make Mom miserable by making her think about food. Yet she came into my room wandering about me right before my second alarm went off. I was already mostly dressed when she came in ready herself. Finally we left the house at 7 am I had determined to use the northern route from our house. We had been going that route more because the rock road was better than the south roads to the east or the west lately. However as I passed my neighbors houses I am grateful I was able to see the road and the tree that had fallen down the night before.

Backtracking took a couple of minutes out of our timing. I tend to have somewhat of a leaded foot and it really didn’t make a difference, except that the car did get dirtier due to the other road. We were still on time if not still a bit early. The problem was that the hospital didn’t seem to be in any hurry. Mom got registered within a good time frame, but for the first time we and all of the other several people already registered just sat and filled the lobby. I wasn’t used to that because usually after the process of registering you go to where you are headed straight away in most every case I have been there. Yet we sat for another good half an hour before being called back finally.

Watching the nurse stick Mom was like magic. She did it so effortlessly, Mom’s veins are hard to stick generally. The nurse found one on the inside of her arm though and she got it with the first stick. This is one thing I love to watch other professional phlebotomists after knowing a little bit about what it takes to stick patients myself. Although my patients had fistulas, grafts, or catheters. During this time I prayed with Mom and just kept her company until it was time. When that phone call came I didn’t know what all would happen in between. I believed God was in control everything would be fine and told Mom that as well.

Tomorrow I will finish this story that really should have been a short and sweet story not needing all this time for the actual happenings.
