Writing Prompt:

Describe a family member.

Considering my recent hardware removal surgery. One family member comes to mind specifically. Back in 2022 when I had my first surgery to remove the screws and plate was the week we welcomed a new member to our family.

We knew Dad was thinking about getting Mom a surprise for her birthday a week or two prior. So on a Monday night we had trouble locating a specific item from Rural King. We had been to Terre Haute didn’t find it then on that day we went to Vincennes, it was another bust until we they said they could look at other stores for us and possibly have one sent to a store for us. Two came up for us however, one was in Missouri I think and the other was in Evansville. Once we found this out it was already late in the afternoon.

So my Mom, Uncle and brother James went to grab a bite at Taco Bell. Dad called us saying my surgery could be moved up by a month. My surgeon has always been quite accommodating for me. So I said absolutely yes. I had a few more days in between that time unlike the 2 days this last time. The call came on Monday afternoon and I had surgery that Friday afternoon.

The item we were going to purchase that night was a Dog Palace for Kodie Girl. We got it two days before we got her. There was something about having her around right before going under the knife again. She needed to be watched and given lots of love for a good while. The timing was just really special.

The day of my surgery my Mom and brother were with me, because my Dad didn’t work and someone had to watch my niece. So she got to meet Kodie that day and bond with her. Kodie would actually look us in the eye and seem to talk to us. It was funny, cute and she made us fall in love with her so easily. After my surgery I would go out and sit at the swing and just sit and talk back to her when she talked to me. Goodness I miss her… I think we have all said that at different times in the past 2 years.

The one perhaps sour note of her character was that when she was lonely it sounded like she was howling. We do not believe her to be at all any percentage of a wolf, but who really knows when they come from a shelter. She was quite a unique character for one of our favorite dogs, and unfortunately, a brief member of the family. She was an older dog with hearing issues though that coincidentally how she died.

Kodie was more than just a member of the family she was a blessing for a time when we all really needed her!
