The year after Grandpa died I began a tradition while I was at college. On days like today, I would eat something he would have enjoyed. Subway was on that list right before he died. The Chicken Teriyaki was by far his favorite from that sandwich shop. So it became a family favorite for most of us. Before that sandwich though there was the Italian Beef although there was also the breadsticks from another favorite restauant.

There would be times on Saturday morning specifically because I would be washing dishes at whatever time of the day and Grandma and Grandpa would catch me. Yes I would be singing a song at the top of my lungs and then I would scream because they scared me. Somehow though they would come home after eating at Backstreet Pizza and have leftover Pepperoni Bread sticks for us. Every once in a while it would be a whole order for no specific reason they just wanted to spoil us.
Another favorite of Grandpa’s was their Italian Beef; they were amazing. Tonight though in memory of his love for those sandwiches we ate at Joe’s Pizza tonight. Uncle Tony, James, Mom and I have fallen hard for these specific Beef’s they are the bomb and Thursdays the sandwich platters are a $1 off. Grandpa used to show us how he ate them and thought we should also do so. When he was so animated over this I have to admit he was right. Soaking the bread for several seconds in the Au Jus that was flavored perfectly. It was positively a divine meal.

He taught us to soak up all the goodness of the Au Jus. As you can see I still follow his sweetly remembered instructions. He enjoyed eating good food and made it fun.
Do you have specific foods that remind you of anyone in your family?
