Flunking Tacos

This afternoon I decided we needed to make tacos for supper. It’s been a while since we have done so too long. I enjoy making our own tacos with our favorite toppings and some rice on the side and tostitos. It’s fun usually.

However, after I made that decision I looked for a package of hamburger meat in the freezer downstairs. I couldn’t find one. Then I thought Mom said there was some upstairs in the freezer so I had to call to make sure. No, it was downstairs. She ended up finding it downstairs.

In the meantime she got home and then was off in the opposite direction to get some medicines we all were needing. By this time I was getting things figured out between the hamburger and the Chorizo in one skillet and the Chorizo in the beans as well as a tinier chunk of Chorizo for the side dish of rice. Chorizo can be a bit much to use the whole package, but in hamburger a little goes a long ways in flavoring the meat.

So… I began cooking the Chorizo and the hamburger although within seconds I could see something different with the hamburger. It looked gross upon closer inspection and I had to make an SOS call. This meat could absolutely not be used. Just touching it and looking at the sick color was making me feel sick. They were unable to backtrack though to a grocery store and said they would head to the Dollar Store.

All I could do was wait and get out of the kitchen for a bit to settle my stomach and my nose. Once I had settled I realized I could still get the Chorizo and the beans going and at least put it into a bowl that could be warmed up right before eating. When Mom got home with the meat she had to tell me they didn’t have any regular hamburger. When I heard that I was thinking well then what other kind of hamburger is there? I hadn’t thought about using a bag of already cooked, but frozen grilled hamburgers before.

Instantly I went into problem solving mode and went for the food processor. That worked really well as far as grinding up the meat to put with the Chorizo. Either I didn’t put enough pork sausage in it or I needed to put the taco sauce to engulf the meat. The meat was very grilled burgers aromatically. Except we were trying to pull off tacos with the same meat. For our purposes it did work, but it would not have been our first thought obviously.

I tried putting more taco sauce on the meat while in the taco to cancel out the burger taste. When that didn’t work I added Chipotle sauce I could still taste the thoughts of having a grilled burger. Mom and my brother ate it without comment. After that I mentioned maybe I was just paranoid after having cooked the bad meat and dealing with the horrible smell just an hour or so before.

So… I feel like I flunked making tacos this evening. Do you ever feel like this when things go against you?
