Play Time… Learning

Technically I still feel like I am an amateur myself. Using a machine is much different than the sewing I have been doing with cross-stitch using my hands without a machine. Yet I was fortunate enough to find some paw print and Americana dog fabric lately, in the hopes to have some fun with my niece. Not to mention sharing with her a skill that I had wished I had garnered from my Grandmother’s and their personal sewing machines.

Last night though was fun, even as I was tired from the heat, as I was from driving and going here and there. If I could spark an interest for these three girls to find some happiness and enjoyment from accomplishing something they had never done was a positive experience.

My niece already had her cousin over this past weekend. So after supper we ended up picking up this cousin’s cousin. We headed home with three girls at age 11 and younger. The girls kept themselves busy playing on their various devices until all of a sudden my niece got out her Diamond painting craft. So once a couple of them got immersed in that I decided to try putting another pillow together. What happened next was somewhat expected, but at the same it wasn’t.

All three girls were adamant they wanted to sew. I let them each sew a side. My niece was the first and she did really well staying on the line and not going too fast with the pedal. The other girls had lead feet. I can’t say too much because I also have the same problem. We now have the inner pillow with the stuffing to finish before we complete the pillow. The question is will they have the same fervor to work on it as they did last night.

It is my prayer and hope that they will all find a desire now to see how making something themselves can be an amazing way to be empowered. One of the girls says she’s seen her Grandma’s sewing machine, but that she hadn’t used it herself or been formally introduced to the machine. It sounded like if someone gave her or them the time, effort and energy to lovingly teach them how to use this machine they would learn so much more.
