May Twelfth

Since I was born we were taught that this is a day for our Mothers. It’s a wonderful day to spend time with and give the women in our lives gifts and attention. In my household though it’s a double whammy with the special days.

The day that’s meant to honor my Mom and Grandmas and the women of our family is also a day for my Dad. Grandma Betty’s gift on Mother’s Day one year was her only baby boy, after having 5 daughters. Therefore, the new baby rounded out the tally of kids to 6 making them a family of 8.

The irony of our situation is that now we can’t celebrate Mother’s Day without also celebrating Dad’s birthday and likewise we can’t Celebrate Father’s Day without Mom’s birthday. Mom wasn’t born on Father’s Day but since they are so close we tend to double them both up.

We used to, on the Alsman side, have May birthdays altogether, my parents and mom’s younger brother, Uncle Mike. Of course he has been gone for well over a decade now so it’s just the two birthdays now. Those were good times that seem… like forever ago.

Do you have fun awkward birthdays in your family that you have to share with different holidays or events?

My birthday is on Inauguration Day the newer date. It was originally in March, it would be nice to not have to share my day with the president, especially if I didn’t vote for him or possibly her in the future.
