This morning began as a usual morning. Mom and I even got a 20 minute walk in before heading out for her appointment. I briefly thought about texting my niece who had just arrived home around midnight to 1:30 am so I had figured she was still asleep. So I put that thought out of my head.
Mom’s appointment was at 11:30 and as soon as we parked she spoke to the receptionist and signed in. I got the first text from my niece telling me they made it home last night. I then texted her that Mamaw and I were at a doctor’s appointment. Not long later we were called back. I didn’t see the ‘Later’ text until now looking back at our texts from earlier. I had turned my phone off during the visit, but Mom forgot to so in the visit she called Mamaw.
Everything you don’t want to happen in an office visit was happening. Mom had also remembered she needed to ask Dad a question about medicine so she called him after Selena called her. She must have gotten a hold of Grandpa because Dad’s phone went straight to his messages. Then when we were in the visit Dad called back I had to send him to leave a message.
By the time we got out of the office I saw the next message I thought I received. They were emoji’s one was the crying one and the other was the mad. The message was loud and clear. She asked if we could pick her up, we said yes once we got home. However, there was a little bit of a caveat. She was supposed to go home today and we barely got 15 minutes with her Friday before they left. So we had to instantly changed our plans.
Instead of Mom trying on Easter dresses and eating at Applebees possibly, we ate quickly at Dairy Queen. Especially when I got messages saying ‘I am going to cry’ with another crying emoji. Even my text saying ‘we will dry those tears girly’ with a heart emoji didn’t help. Her response was, ‘that you are not funny either lol.’ Then she said, ‘no body better be laughing so yeah.’ My next three texts seemed to help calm her down. I said, ‘no one is laughing honey, and we are just about on our way I need to refill my tea and finally we love you with more emoji hearts and the kiss.’
When we finally headed south back home I saw her response, love you. Everything was good again. At least this meant she missed us and wanted some of us time. Knowing this gave us some measure of warmth today that I know my parents and I needed lately.
Once we got to her at the trailer we were forced to wait for what seemed like forever. Even though there had been a deadline and she was to be picked up by her mom’s side at 3:30 someone had told her to spend extra time doing something that someone else could have been doing. Yet once her mom found out she was with Mamaw she thought it would be fine for us to take her home afterwards.
The twist is that in our rush to leave DQ our uncle forgot his phone on our way to take Selena to Monicals. They had called Mom using his phone. We thought it was James calling and that it was at our house or Tony’s car. That would be too easy for today though, right!
You know what this means? We had to go back up to Terre Haute again so Uncle Tony could pick up his phone. It was going to end up being a very long day. Plus Selena heard this entire conversation. She also wanted to go back up with us. We knew that would be pushing Mommy a little bit too much today so we fed her and got her desert chocolate ice cream and headed back to Daddy’s trailer. Some little girl didn’t think about Mommy changing her mind so she didn’t bring her jacket with her that she needed to take home.
Mamaw picked Jiffy Treat and yet I knew after our quick and unusual routine couldn’t eat anymore at the moment. So I didn’t order anything for myself like the others did.

You see Uncle Tony’s large chocolate cone? Yeah his eyes were bigger than his stomach. So guess what happened? As you can see he ate the first dip and I ate the 2nd dip, but then I couldn’t go much further down the cone personally. It’s hard to continue to say no to chocolate when it was staring me in the face. plus when I heard Uncle Tony said it was too much even though he himself ordered two dips I couldn’t refuse to help him out a little bit. Especially on this crazy, ridiculously day.
Fortunately we got home before Papaw took off for work. It allowed Selena to find her coat and say bye and give him one more hug before she went home. Once we got on the road again we headed back up north where we retrieved a phone and Mom tried on some dresses and I spent a handful of minutes in JoAnns before turning back down south to pick up a few items from the grocery store on our way back home.
Adapting to whatever circumstances seems to be what I do. No matter how crazy the day seems from the crazy ups and downs that I have to work around. Do you have days like this? One of the sweetest moments was when my niece looked at my phone looking at her school’s Facebook page. One of the staff at her school graduated from UHS with me and her Mom graduated with Mom. So it was sweet to hear my niece say that this lady had told her to say hi to me. It was the first time I got to show her she was my classmate. It’s endearing to know your classmates remember you or your name and the fact Selena’s last name is Bishop helped my friend to remember me. This was just a sweet moment to have with my niece today and with Mom thinking of the different generations with both of our families.
Even during a crazy day God gives us sweet moments to cherish.
