History is made up of people making intriguing decisions during good and bad moments in time. Sometimes you have limited time to think before making a decision. It’s also like that old game of telephone you start out with one person being told a message and by the time it gets through to just a handful of people a wild story has been created.
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”
Marie Curie
My guilty pleasure is watching ‘The Way Home’ from Hallmark the second season is about to conclude. It has been a nail biter for certain over this season as the first was last year. The historian in me has enjoyed this Series going back in time and seeing the ripples of our decisions or indecision. Life is complicated and engrossing watching it be portrayed through this family and group of friends in Port Haven.
Just a couple of weeks ago one of the scenes I loved was the fact they were on a haunted tour through the woods. The very woods that this legend became known as the White Witch or Witches. They weren’t even sure if it was one witch or two. Yet somehow down the line from the 19th century to the present day time they had unknowingly made it multiple witches not knowing any truth beyond the lore.
It was funny watching this clip of seeing her admit to creating the legend of the White Witch. Even more so watching how her comment left a reaction on her friends face. Desperation is the creative flow when necessary at times for survival though. The legend shows how much that one decision stoked a fear that would live on for centuries whether or not the legend was accurate.
What other fears could be under that umbrella? Things not understood so it is feared instead? Covid perhaps, anything Trump says and the media distorts or takes out of context. Then they say he should be feared especially another term. Yet… during his term did he come after Americans, when did he create chaos in the world. Did the Middle East become a powder keg under his leadership? How was gas when he was in office?
These are just more recent examples. I am certain World War I and II had their various fears that were much different from what was true. Take a look in a history book or even the Bible during Moses time. How many mothers do you think wanted to be Moses’ Mother their deliverer? Or even in the line of king David and I’ll go even further the birth mother of Christ!
