The Proverbs Say…

How many times are we warned by our elders about dangers? Yet how many times do we end up finding out for ourselves how right they were in warning us? Why do we think we are so invincible when we are younger?

Stories from the Bible are meant to teach us about those dangers that is why we attend Sunday School as children. It is a slow methodical way for our brains to learn the truth about life and humanity. The Proverbs were even taught to Solomon he did not come up with these truths by himself, he just wrote them out for us to be able to read and study.

Chapter 1: 20-33 is the last of the third section of that first chapter of introduction to what the Proverbs is for and its importance. The topic says, ‘Wisdom Warns’. A number of circumstances instantly came to mind of myself being warned and now being the adult warning my niece and cousins of warnings. My how the time has fled being the adult isn’t always easy, but it is necessary and it is an essential task.

It’s quite surreal I was just recently in a very real situation last weekend with two young girls. They know everything. Sometimes I have a hard time deciphering who the children are from the adults. I really don’t like it when children have to have devices everywhere including during dinner. I wouldn’t have allowed the devices inside the restaurant period if I had realized their intentions. The fact they can’t have a real conversation while sitting down family style to eat is very disturbing to me.

Music is very near and dear to me. To have a teenage girl tell me all music is the same sent off another flag in my mind. Then she went on to say that Eminem was someone she listened to and really enjoyed although she maybe probably shouldn’t be. They couldn’t see how much I was seething from these little bits of information I was hearing from them. I love music, but I was sheltered, in that my music was church and gospel music for the most part. I did hear stuff from school and on the radio I wasn’t banned from listening from anything I listened to a mixture of genres. I don’t however, listen to vulgar music when I hear cussing I change it. When I listen to what those girls are listening to I want to get rid of all of it it’s abhorrent to my ears and to God’s more importantly.

Adam and Eve brought sin into the world with one bite from a forbidden fruit. How did they warn their generations of family about sin and the watchers? How did they warn about Cain’s attitude towards his younger brother and ultimately the first human death?

Warnings are meant to steer a person from danger and to give clarity about how to see danger. Only fools who believe themselves to be invincible or just simply don’t care walk into traps set specifically for them. Music is one of those traps. Having a melody that just sounds good, but if you don’t actually listen to the lyrics how do you know it is good. Lucifer used his sparkly demeanor and his old heavenly body to infatuate Adam and Eve; his intention however was not good for them.

What do you have to warn about to your family and friends? Or are you the one being warned?
