Okay I have mentioned this before in articles. I was raised by women who would not let me or my brothers and cousins say the word ‘bored.’ They were always happy to remind us of all the chores or little things we could find to work on for ourselves or for them. So for certain I steered clear of saying that word around my mom and grandma’s. Plus I legitimately could always find something to do with myself.
On top of cooking, cleaning and washing I already had hobbies as a child. Music was a very early and beloved talent that I quickly multiplied singing with learning to play piano. Then between Grandma and my aunts we played with beads making bracelets and with some other beads making magnets and Christmas ornaments. Plus cross-stitch became another beloved hobby that I used for myself but to give as gifts to others for decades.
Leisurely reading and reading for research purposes has also been something I have grown into. I did much more of this as a teenager. There are so many hobbies I have in my life there is no reason to use that word. I do think the other reason my family wanted us to find these outlets was so we wouldn’t get in trouble. When you don’t have a purpose you are more likely to fall victim to the enemy of your soul. Have you ever heard that ‘idle hands are the devils playground.’
How do you combat such an idea? For me it has been to continue to do the work God has for me. Reading the bible and about the men and women who have stories shared by the prophets through God’s word these accounts are real stories that happened and show what God has and will do. It’s encouraging, inspirational and straight from our Creator. Each of us has a purpose in this life.
