Well… it wasn’t exactly my idea and actually us grandkids loved the idea. Of course, as my uncles love to remind me they were the two actually doing the grunt work and it wasn’t all fun. After my Grandpa Freddy & Grandma Rosemary went to Australia and New Zealand with his brother Horace and Margaret Papaw decided to breed Emus.
There were some other families in Southern Indiana that were also breeding and living that idea. We got to visit them and were invited to try emu meat. I don’t remember if it was a party or just simply like a tasting menu for our family. It was down around the Evansville area and then another couple had some accommodations closer to us in the South Knox area, I think.
Like I said we had fun with this as kids, Grandma and Grandpa did too. It was Uncle Tony and Uncle Mike that didn’t like it too well. Especially when there was an accident and they sliced Uncle Mike’s knee really well. I don’t remember if it was with their beak or their foot. I do know it hurt him pretty well. Yet it was the price of feeding them that took its toll and was the last straw for Papaw. So our two-year business of breeding Emu’s which had also turned into an Educational experience with all our school corporations as well was an added bonus.
One of these days I will have to find all of my Emu photos and build up a series on them we had tons of photos from over the two years. It was a special, incredible and dangerous experience for our family.
