Devotional Time
Joseph, like Mary, had a unique role in Christ’s birth story. He knew he wasn’t the father of Mary’s child, but he listened and believed the Angel in his dream. Can you imagine taking on that responsibility knowing your adopted child was the Messiah?
I love learning these Greek words and their meanings. So we have been taught most of us that Joseph was a carpenter, right? The Greek word that describes his job is tekton a man that is skilled in carpentry, stone masonry and also engraving. Another word architektonos means a master builder and how we got the word architect. Joseph was an artisan and Christ learned from him as well as his younger brothers.
Joseph was a good man who did what was needed of him. The dependable, stable man who wanted to protect the messiah in Mary’s womb and Mary herself. They were both chosen by God to be Christ’s earthly parents for very special reasons.
Herod the Great, wanted to make Sepphoris “the ornament of all Galilee.” One of Ms. Hunt’s mentors Paul Wright believes Joseph and Jesus would have been at this site a couple hours journey from Nazareth. This job would have opened up new jobs for the family business quite a bit.
Mary and Joseph may not have started out in love but I have to believe after Christ was born and they started their life together intimately they had proven their esteem and had fallen in love. From scripture brothers and sisters were mentioned the question is how many?
God has a purpose for everyone no matter how little or large it may seem. Joseph may have tried to protect Jesus if he had lived to see His ministry. His time in Jesus life was short, but impactful and in God’s will.
