I began college at Oakland City University in the Spring Semester. Which means I started in the middle of winter. My first big winter weather storm didn’t take long to happen. In fact I was afraid I wouldn’t get home that week at all. We had a lot of snowfall down south.
During this week Bob Lucas died one of our friends at Fellowship. There was a connection I had along with my brothers along with some of their grandchildren. We were Dugger Bulldogs together. Tanisha was one of my classmates and her brother I can’t remember the nickname that everyone used to call him now, but he was younger than my brothers I want to say. I could be wrong though he could have been in James’ class.
Today I found this old cookbook from 1996 where we brought in our grandparents recipes to make a Grandparents Day Cookbook. The cover page says “Today’s Special, Dugger Elementary Cookbook Grandparents’ Day October 18, 1996.” I would have been 11 but I don’t remember anything about this book at all.
Looking through this book a lot of names hit me in different ways. Even the names that are not in here. Seeing Leona’s name with her grandchildren’s names brought such memories to mind from long, long ago. That is what is so awesome about finding this today.
Bob Lucas, Leona’s husband is one of those men Grandpa Freddy really respected and enjoyed getting to know. Unfortunately I didn’t get to interview this Veteran before his death that week of my nearly being stuck on campus. My car due to the cold temperatures wouldn’t even start to leave campus and I had to have the Dean of Student Life help me start my car. Dr. Pratt was one of my favorite professors on campus and one I will always remember.
When I began the Fellowship Veterans Day Program of 2007 Leona was one of the first women to promptly give me this beautiful uniform photo of her husband and a summary of his service time in World War II and Korea.

Grandpa and Bob were both Navy men that was one of their connections. The other was being God-fearing men of God.
