Wow to start with because my Grandpa Leo was a POW in Germany I had a longstanding bias against anything German. I know it sounds ludicrous now, but Grandpa was just as German as I am and he was incarcerated by the Germans for 10 months. Whatever family we have there weren’t coming to help him then.
It turns out I have at least 4 slices of my family that have very German sounding names. Yet it took some education and meeting one German woman to make me interested in my German heritage. A woman I met in College choir. Grandpa Freddy somehow was able to broaden my mind with Sauerkraut.
Also on both sides of my family are little silvers of Cherokee. In College I took a Plains Indians Class. It was really neat to have a whole semester talking about Indians. Plus we have been to Cherokee in the Smoky Mountains. My Grandpa Leo and Uncle Norman have always been complimented about their high cheekbones.
