Once Lilly and I got in the car heading for Sullivan County it didn’t take long to get to our destination. So she was able to get her birth certificate for her upcoming travels. She was happy to get another step of the process done.
However, for me it was like being in my backyard. Some of the day seems muted or blurred from days of having slept over the past years. Somehow Justin got to the dentist, but we ended up going and picking him up. It seems like it was late afternoon 3 ish and on our way back to Vincennes we stopped at Wendy’s to get some chicken nuggets and chocolate frosties. I may have been feeding the frosty to Lilly as she was driving.
The food was gone by the time we got to the last 5 minutes to my Uncle’s house. I had heard about a couple of my cousins on both sides of my family actually finding themselves in corn fields with their vehicles. This was a first of a kind for me though. Okay I remember it was a long slow curve coming from a high ground to the low ground. It all happened really fast due to the lead foot on the gas. I have to admit though, she does get it honestly.
Grandpa Freddy, Uncle Floyd and my Dad are all partially to blame. Anyhow she was going too fast and lost control. Poor kid, Justin was like scrambled eggs going all over the backseat. When we finally landed it was more so in the ditch of a field it seemed. The sobering moment was when we saw how close to the poll my seat was from it. Less than 2 feet closer things could have been different.
We were safe, but the car wouldn’t start. Lilly had to make some phone calls. At least one, knowing her dad and mom were at work. I think she called the neighbor first. I don’t recall, I do think she called insurance though too. It’s funny I don’t remember calling my parents after it happened either. I think I vaguely remember Uncle Floyd saying he called my parents later on when we all were back at their house.
The feeling of wow…what just happened here took a while to dull off my senses. Except… that feeling… overwhelmed me once again… just this morning.
The mine road south of us and next to Hickory Cemetery has some loose and rather large rocks. I am not usually a reckless driver, but I have driven over those rocks time and time again. Once I lost control there was no stopping the car only the earth and greenery would be able to force a stop. I didn’t get to finish my thought, once the words came, Oh Lord… my car was fishtailing and I was on my way to the right side of the road going so fast. All of this was in seconds.
My car landed going the opposite direction I was originally headed in the grass on the side of the road partially. Talk about deja-vu…

We didn’t take pictures of our accident as far as I remember back in 2005. I didn’t think about it until Mom and I were on our way back home. The left photo shows my tire tracks and to the right of the photo is where my car landed. The second photo is where my car took the turn back in the opposite direction. Somehow by the grace of God I missed that stop sign.
This was not how I intended to end this article. One just never knows what will happen day to day. To have an accident while I am writing about an old accident… is actually… pretty freaky.
I have mentioned I don’t know how many times, that Justin was rolling in that backseat. I even called him scrambled eggs because of that. This morning I was the driver and I was the one who felt like scrambled eggs…
