1903

This man was brought into the world at the turn of this new century. So much was happening and on the cusp in this 20th Century. This young boy ended up being in the newspaper quite a bit while growing up into a young man. To make this easier, today is my Great-Grandpa Arla’s Birthday. He is 120 years old up in heaven. This article is a little bit different; I hope my family will enjoy this and those of you who like old articles and photos.

  • Sullivan Daily Times October 11, 1912; on the front of the page bottom right corner.

    Arla was 9 years old.
    • Carlisle News May 4, 1917 on page 5 under Pleasantville Items.

      13 years old.
  • Carlisle News January 25, 1918 on page 3 Under Local News.

    Now 14 years old.
  • Carlisle News June 14, 1918 on page 2 under Pleasantville Items.

Over a month away from turning 15.

Carlisle News Jan 7, 1921 on page 5 under Local News Elect S.S. Officers

    He was 17 years old.

Carlisle News March 25, 1921 page 5 under Pleasantville Items. * The words are hard to see as you go farther down the page. You can see the misspelled first name, but Lester looks a bit off next to Orville.

  • Carlisle News May 6, 1921 on page 2 under Pleasantville Commencement.

Bicknell Daily Times September 25, 1923 page 8

    At the age of 20.
  • The second picture says on the back Arla and his big sweet potatoes Sept or Oct 1971

  • Linton Daily Citizen August 10, 1939 on page 4. *This article was wrong on so many levels. Where he and his parents lived was right and parts of their names were right and the fact that there was a surgery. I had to get the facts from Grandma Betty about her twin brother.

Arla was 36 at this point in his life.

The back of this photo says Arla Lester, David Carr 1990. I am just really glad I was not around that day I would have been 5 years old apparently. The first few times I saw this it didn’t register what Grandpa was holding. I tend to stay away from the ‘s’ word. I have a horrifying bedroom story and the fact that it didn’t register in my mind was the hallmark for that story as well.

This is a new favorite photo of mine I have found. from left to right my Dad’s Uncle Bob, my Grandpa Leo, My Dad, Dad’s Grandpa, his Uncle Gene, and his cousin Doug with his Dad Uncle Jim.

What I love about the articles I have found is that so many of them deal in what my Great-Grandpa was doing in Church.

They will know you are Christian by your works. Yet he wasn’t saved by his works.
