Mowing Chronicles

Sometimes mowing entailed more than we figured on. Although, I may have asked for the added tasks. When we mow around our own sheds we run over various floaters from surrounding trees.

Our shed has a tree that showers good golf-ball sized walnuts around the east side of our newer shed as we somewhat call it. Grandma Betty’s in the back yard there are trees that drop persimmons. These are the worst when mowing. They mash up too easily and the tires get dirty really quickly. I have to get away to some of the cleaner grass a few swipes away to try to knock off the mishmash of gunk.

Lastly, would be the head hitters that could really hurt when my head got in the way. At Aunt Dorothy’s there were some apple trees that could make things a little difficult. I tended to get as close as possible to take advantage of each tool as I could, so yes I got slapped in the head especially with those apple trees and apples a time or two or three. In my mind it was still the easiest way to make the yard and the trees look good.

There was a point in time when I couldn’t just go over them like the persimmons they could be messy and I didn’t like making big messes. So eventually if there were enough bad apples that had fallen I would pick them up before getting too close to those trees.

Then for a couple years in a row we picked up the apples after asking her if we could and even brought her some of the good ones first. We made some good apple pies and apple butter from her apple trees. I even made enough apple butter that first year to make stocking-stuffers out of them for one year for the other side of the family. It was my first time making it although, I had seen mom and dad make it when I was younger. I thought it would be a unique and homemade delight. I remember all of the guys had theirs gone that first night.

Did you know that mowing could bring about such sweet delights.

Have you had to deal with mowing over things or picking them instead in order to save the headache of the clean up later? What kinds of things have hit your head while mowing?
