An American Soldier’s Post Card

This was found consequently months after we found the postcard in one of the chests in the house.

Sweetheart

Just for yourself I love YOU for the things you do. For your sunny smiles and happy ways your heart that’s always True Some win their way with favors or treasures they may own But you are dear to me SWEETHEART for your Dear Self alone.

Fort Leonard Wood, MO

From what I have seen, this was the first of my Grandparent’s war correspondence. I could be wrong and more could present themselves as has just happened recently. God has greatly surprised me with these little kisses of extra goodness.

So think about this your beau just enlisted in the Army it’s 1943. You are a junior and have another year of schooling left. You receive this postcard knowing your boyfriend is now officially a soldier in the United States Army. What a feeling that must have been for grandma? Mail was everything to everyone.

Papaw’s perhaps first postcard and he was already talking about Church. I love that about Grandpa how much he talked about his bible routine and Church attendance at Chapel in his letters to his gal. The word gosh on that 4th line down just fills me with warmth I really miss him.

I wish I could date this more specifically, but it’s close.

Yet I get to see him through these newer found letters once again. They bring him alive in a way I didn’t get to see him as or I don’t remember him as anyway. He was grandpa by the time I arrived in the mid 1980s some 40 years after the war.

My very first post on Word Press tells of the emotion I had that day when I first saw this card. I now feel the emotions clog up my throat again and tears threaten my eyelashes. Do you get this way thinking of people you miss?
