American Letters

Do you still receive letters or cards in the mail? Letters seem to be a thing of the past. No one takes the pains to write anymore except to text or post emoji’s. Writing doesn’t carry the same fervency and excitement as it once did.

A letter from Grandpa to Grandma literally days before being captured.

Yet I still watch and observe my mother picking out cards pretty regularly for birthdays and get well soon messages or even for encouragement. The Open Door usually has a better display of cards than most places seeing that the quality of the messages are more biblical.

Do cards still have a place in our society?

Is there time for them?

Mom nearly forgot an Anniversary a couple of weeks ago. One of my cousins, also her nephew. She got it out a little late, but as of this weekend she got a response from him. If this idea of card giving is so antiquated; why did his response really move us?

When you have a still small voice urging you to do something kind for someone don’t hesitate! Even a text message of encouragement can brighten someone’s day. Thinking about receiving his response has been on my mind ever since. What he shared with mom shows me again how I sometimes wish I could be more like my mother in certain ways.

This new topic kind of came out of nowhere and yet was in part due to Sunday. However, there are some letters handwritten and yes some are my personal texts to and from my boyfriend. One of the interesting facts I have noticed is that I have come to use the same endearments in my correspondence as my Grandpa Leo did while in the service and overseas. It’s fun to see the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree in that respect as with several other matters.

Once I started to think about letters, cards and missives several ideas began to manifest. I could probably think of a better title other than American Letters, but it still suits the range of missives. Maybe I will also pull out a family Revolutionary letter specifically written for one of my ancestors from the Continental Congress during a certain war.
