How do we know if we are good at something? Is it just because we like it or we don’t hear any complaints from others over what or how we may have accomplished something. What measuring stick are we using?
There are times I still wonder what on earth is my forte. There are things I like, but I know I’m not as skilled as others. My likes and what I’m good at are like playing semantics. I enjoy playing around in the kitchen, but it doesn’t mean I always know what I’m doing, like a Chef. Music was something I feel born into especially with my dad leading as a singer and my mom accompanying him, yet I am not Opera Singer. No matter how many times I read the music, my fingers tend to be rebellious and they ad lib on the actual melody or harmony of the precise measurements of the music in front of me.
Being good at something means time has been taken to hone an ability. I can say I have worked on that musically and even in the kitchen. Liking something doesn’t exactly mean you know what you are doing or that you are necessarily good at it. Unless and until genuine compliments come from other people, not generated by those who want to raise your self-esteem, which can be necessary at times.
Do you have a need to be good at something? Necessity through trial and error has been good for me through the years. I know some do’s and don’ts in the kitchen and with my instruments of choice. When you have 3 guys wanting to eat something you learn to be good at a few recipes in order to fill their stomachs; not necessarily gorge them.
If you are good at something use those skills or you could lose them potentially.
