Family is precious and our memories will follow us wherever we go. My Grandpa Freddy spent time with his children and grandchildren teaching us about our family. Memorial Day was a special time for our family.
Dinner would be eaten some of us would play, others talk and the rest would clean up the kitchen. Then a parade of cars and vans would follow Grandpa’s car. I don’t know if there were more than 3 cars, but I remember being at Hickory Cemetery in the drive that used to have a circular curve for parking. We would somehow fill it up it seemed like… the memory of a younger girl is not perfect though to remember more specific details.
The importance of sharing our family history with us was imperative to my grandparents. This was an annual festivity until he died. Sadly we don’t celebrate it as much as a big family anymore. Looking back it was a really sweet time for our family and because of it I have memories I can still cherish.

As a teenager and young adult I began helping with the placement of flowers on the gravestones. We used to put quite a few around at various cemeteries to honor our beloved ones. Even now, I enjoy creating different silk flowers together making a unique sight of color for the stones.

The hope that my family has is that we will see our loved ones again. The ones who made their decision before it was too late. They are not in these graves their souls are with Christ. The flowers are simply for us to remember them by and to take time to remember how they touched our lives.
