Being Carsick On A Trip

Road Trips can be fun. I do enjoy them as long as the road stays straight. If they don’t it can totally ruin my trip. I had a migraine and hadn’t completely gotten rid of it by Friday. So I was already sure I should not get into the car to go to Cincinnati, Ohio. There were two cars dad wanted to see. The first was in Indy and the second in Ohio. The idea was that a second driver would be needed and I was meant to be that driver. My head though, wasn’t sold on that idea so my younger brother said he would without hesitation.

Somehow something changed by the next morning. I still thought I would be happier working on a couple projects and wanted to stay and take away the possibility of getting carsick altogether.

When the car rolled out of the carport all 4 of us were in the car. I protested, but was reassured I wouldn’t get sick. Less than 20 minutes later the first motions of sickness turned my stomach. I thought okay, I’ll be fine if I can just make it to the Burger King parking lot. It’s the last spot we usually stop before getting onto the interstate. It was a long drive like it is for me not feeling well in the backseat, but God kept the contents of my stomach in my stomach thankfully.

So much for a fun little trip. Switching to the front seat did help, but would not be the only time we would be on a curvy road unfortunately.

Then dad’s GPS took us on a different detour to 10th Street taking us through Avon. By the looks of it it was the business district. Which brings me to a first memory from high school. As far as I know I have never been to Avon before. My Principal came from that area and he had a daughter my age and two boys. We had common interests namely music. Her dad played Big Band music; he was an awesome principal because of his personal love and support of our music programs.

I nearly missed our ‘Big Band’ Night that his band played for our music boosters. Perhaps it was just the fact there was dancing and I was not comfortable dancing… I don’t know what it was…possibly a normal, simple case of shyness. It ended up being a night I will not forget. There were maybe 2 actual couples in my friends group, but we were mostly there to have fun together.

Looking at the street signs saying, Town of Avon, these moments, my friend and her dad came fondly to my mind. Why do you think we were shown this route by the GPS? I don’t think these memories would have come to mind otherwise. Why through Avon when we had never come that specific route before? Sometimes it fascinates me how God works in the simplest details.

Minutes later when we found the first car ended as soon as we found it. The car had been sold the day before. So within the first 2 hours it wasn’t looking exactly like a good trip.

So… what happened… next?
